How we did it.

When the car was purchased, some of the interior pieces were not in the proper place so we did some minor repairs to make them look a little better.

Right behind each chair, there is a cover (photo #1). It is made out of a real hard plastic. The covers hide the mechanics of the top (photo #2) needed to either be replaced or repaired. We opted to repair them. When this car was purchased way back when, they were very loose. At the time it was not known why or how we should go about fixing them. The following short article show step by step how we did this.

Well one day we decided to take a closer look at why they seemed to not do the job they were designed for.

The part has several screws that hold it on at the door jamb with a metal piece to brace it (photo #3). There is a screw that holds it on at the inside towards the bottom also. The brace for this screw comes out of the carpet.

When we took the cover out we saw that the fiberglass on the door jamb had been broken out where the screw holes should be. That is another job for another day.

When the cover was taken out of the car, it was painfully obvious that the person who tried to repair this before did not have the right equipment. They drilled out the screw holes and put in wall anchors. It's hard to see in Photo #4 but it is there....

So we used a plastic welder to fix the bad repairs. You can get these from Eastwood tools. The plastic welding kits has several different types of welding rods and for this particular job we used the light gray (photo #5). The plastic melts into the surrounding plastic and then you twist the welding rod when done. This type of repair work requires a strong compressor. If you have anything less than a 25 gallon tank, then be prepared to have the compressor on for the full job. It uses a lot of air.

Once done just sand the excess plastic (photo #6) and the hole is filled in and ready to be drilled out. Be very careful when drilling otherwise be prepared to have the hole go all the way through. very low speed on the drill and go very slow....

Put the cover back on then put the metal cover on, and whala!! Your done!!!!
